Customising LED Strips

Fiona Mellink

LED strips offer huge flexibility, both in terms of their uses and the strip itself. It’s possible to get every aspect of your strip lighting customised, which is particularly popular for large-scale projects or where you have a specific design in mind. But how can you get your LED strips customised?

At The Lighting Outlet, we have a simple process for providing custom LED strip lights. This includes LED strips on their own, as well as full LED lighting systems.

Watch our video below to show the process start to finish on how easy it is to get your get custom LED strip lighting today.

What can I customise?

With a custom quote, you will be able to specify the following details:

Length

This could be one long strip or several shorter strips. There is no minimum length for an LED strip, and we can customise any length, even if it is under a meter. To avoid voltage drop, the maximum length for a LED strip is 5 meters.

Colour

Choose from:

  • Warm White 2700k, 3000k
  • Cool White 4000k
  • Day Light 5500k
  • RGB Multicoloured
  • RGBW Multicolour with Warm White
  • RGBC Multicolour with Cool White

Waterproof rating

We have strip lights suitable for indoor and outdoor use, as well as bathrooms, kitchens, and other high-moisture areas.

Brightness and wattage

Choose from:

  • 4.8w Soft Ambient Light - 400 Lumens per meter
  • 9.6w Soft Practical Ambient  Light - 850 Lumens per meter
  • 14.4w Bright Light - 1250 Lumens per meter
  • 19.2w Extra Bright Light - 1650 Lumens per meter
  • 24w Commercial/Residential Strength - 2400 Lumens per meter
  • 32w Bright Commercial Strength - 3250 Lumens per meter
  • 46w Extra Bright Commercial Strength - 4150 Lumens per meter

Dimmable

Whether lights should be dimmable or standard

Drivers & transformers

Drivers and transformers are optional additions, but feature on most LED strip quotes. Transformers convert the voltage to the right level for LED strip lights, while drivers regulate the current to ensure consistent and safe operation.

Controls

There are a range of control options to select from including wall plates and remote controls. These are also optional extras.

The full range of options is available here: https://thelightingoutlet.com.au/collections/led-strip-controllers

Profiles/ application

LED profiles are how strip lights are usually mounted. They also protect the lights, giving a sleek finish, and aid heat dissipation.

What if I don’t know what I need?

Sometimes choices can be overwhelming! In our quote form, we have an “I’m not sure option” for most questions. Fill in what you can, and we can discuss it with you from there to help you find the right option.

On the other hand, if you have a design or something you want to replicate, you can email this to design@thelightingoutlet.com.au with the dimensions you need and our team will provide the recommended specifications, or a few options to choose from, along with a quote.

How long does it take?

After submitting our quote form, you will hear from us within 48 business hours and, on confirmation and payment, your custom strips will be created. Typically it takes between 3 and 5 business days to create and ship the strips, but it can be shorter or longer depending on the time of year and the specifications of your order. When we provide our quote, we will also send the expected turnaround time for your strips.

Do custom strip lights have a warranty period?

Yes, all custom LED strips have a warranty period of 3 years.

Can you return/ exchange custom LED strips?

Unfortunately, unless faulty, custom strip lights cannot be returned or exchanged.

How do I know the correct driver for my LED strip?

The driver output calculation is determined by "total length X wattage + 20%". All lights connected to the same driver will always turn on and off simultaneously. The driver can be dimmable or no-dimmable. When we provide our quote, we will also recommend the correct driver for your application.

What is voltage drop?

Voltage drop in LED strips essentially means a reduction in brightness, particularly noticeable towards the end of the strip. When the length of the LED strip exceeds the maximum recommended run (5 metres), it can experience voltage drop, resulting in diminished light output. There are a few things you’ll need to do to avoid voltage drop which our team will guide you through.
