Should You Make the Switch to LED Lighting?

Amy C

LED lighting has been around for a while now. If you're one of the people who have always heard of it, but have never felt the need to make the switch from your fluorescent or halogen lights, here are 5 top reasons to illuminate your space with LEDs.

1. Energy Efficient

energy efficient led bulbs

LED lights are 80% more efficient than their incandescent counterparts. LEDs also have a much longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs because they use less energy. The average life of a LED is 25,000 hours. Compare that with the old incandescent bulbs that last a short 1,200 hours. All of this works to create a lowered electricity bill. There now, have we got your attention?

2. Inexpensive

When LEDs first came onto the market, you had to pay $100 for a bulb - we wonder who ordered one of those? Now, thankfully, LEDs are much more affordable. The Lighting Outlet sells LED bulbs for as low as $5. See, for example, our 5W LED globe. When you factor in the energy needed to run incandescents vs LEDs and CFL bulbs, LED comes out on top as the least expensive.

3. Colour Creative

A lot of us look at the LED alarm clocks and think, ‘Yuck, I don’t want that cool, cold light coming from my ceiling’. Well, the good news is technology has evolved to create LED lights in a huge range of colours, some of which are just as warm as a halogen globe. Choose from shades such as ‘warm white’, ‘vintage filament moon beam’, yellow lighting or even pink LEDs. These days there is essentially no difference in lighting colour and warmth between LEDs and incandescents.

4. Environmentally Friendly

A huge reason to buy LED is the environment. If you’re someone who feels bad that recycling is your only contribution, there’s another way you can be an eco-warrior, without fuss. As we know, LEDs are more energy efficient, but did you also know that most LED bulbs are recyclable? The materials inside of LEDs, such as aluminium and glass, are recyclable at your local recycling plant. LED lights also contain no toxic elements such as mercury, lead and phosphorous, that can contaminate the environment upon entering landfill.

5. Cool to Touch

Lastly, while LEDs may come in warm colours, they’re cool to the touch. While we don’t recommend gripping LEDs for hours at a time, you can be safe in knowing that the high powered light runs at a much lower temperature than previous generations bulbs. This also helps to make them resistant to sudden temperature drops and highs.

Have we convinced you to go LED? As the most affordable, long lasting, high powered, durable bulb there’s no doubt LEDs are the best choice.
