Solar Lighting Solutions

Solar technology has evolved significantly over the past 10 years such that solar lights no longer exist purely for their environmental credentials. These practical lights are the first choice for many people, regardless of whether they’re looking for a green solution:

  • They are easy to move, ideal for redecorating or lighting up different areas
  • Can be installed on a DIY basis without the need for an electrician
  • Are not impacted by power cuts, and harder to vandalise my burglars or unwanted intruders
  • Cheap to run, since they generate their own power
  • Easy to maintain
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Discreet - without the need for cabling to a power supply, solar lights can be very stylish and discreet

Solar Lighting FAQs

How long do solar lights stay on at night?

Solar lights can usually run for 6 to 10 hours on a full-charge however our clients often prefer to set them on a timer, similar to traditional outdoor lights.

If you have solar sensor or security lights, they will easily last for the duration of the night, giving you total peace of mind.

Do solar lights need sun or just light?

Solar lights need sunlight to charge and work however this doesn’t need to be direct sunlight. For example, lights will still charge and work on a cloudy day.

Unfortunately, solar lights will not charge from artificial light.

How many lumens is good for an outdoor solar light?

The number of lumens will depend on the type of light you’re using, where you’re using it, and the other lighting around it. For example, deck lighting would typically need fewer lumens than a driveway bollard.

For decorative lights, options from 50 to 150 lumens are generally recommended. For security lights, and those required to ensure safety such as driveway bollards, we suggest 500+ lumens.

To ensure that you make the right choice, we recommend speaking to our lighting design team who can answer your product questions on a free telephone consult.

Do outdoor solar lights work in rain?

The majority of solar lights will work in the rain, both in terms of charging and also lighting up as required. We recommend checking the IP rating of your lights to ensure that they are suitable for use in uncovered spaces, for example in an open garden area rather than under the veranda on a deck. You can find out what IP ratings are and the rating you might need in our useful guide. Our solar lighting collection can also be filtered by IP rating. We recommend an IP rating of IP65 or above for outdoor and deck lights.
