Festoon lights, also commonly referred to as outdoor string lights or Edison string lights, have a retro-charm that create a warm, inviting glow and brighten up any space. They consist of many light bulbs along a cable and derive their name from the Latin word for festival (“festum”) and the traditional wreaths hung at celebrations. They have continued to be used at celebrations as well as around the home and businesses.
From gardens and decks to cafe seating and event spaces, they’re a popular choice for good reason. For more detail on choosing festoon lights, check out our blog on everything you need to know about festoon lighting.
Festoon lights have become popular for all different kinds of outdoor events, including weddings and birthday parties. They’re easy to move and, most importantly, look beautiful too.
Festoon and fairy lights both entail a string of lights around a flexible cable. While festoon lights are generally used for outdoors only, fairy lights can be used indoors and outdoors (provided they are IP rated for outdoor use).
The big difference however is in the globes/ bulbs. Fairy lights have much smaller bulbs and tend to have more lights on the string, positioned closer together. This creates a twinkling effect. Festoon lights on by contrast have fewer, larger bulbs and create a wider, warmer glow.
No, festoon lights are relatively economical to run. However, we would recommend only purchasing from reputable suppliers/ manufacturers to ensure that they are of good quality and will last for several years, as well as being cheap to run.
Yes, provided they are sufficiently IP rated they can be left outside all year round. For more information on IP rating, please refer to our guide here.
Festoon lights can be hung almost anywhere outside and are quick and easy to install, even if you are not a regular DIY-er. Please refer to our two helpful blogs “how to decorate with Festoon Lighting”.
