If you’ve discussed purchasing a ceiling fan with an electrician or ceiling fan supplier, they will very likely have recommended that you purchase a DC fan. 

Direct current fans use a transformer to convert and use a direct current, hence the name. The alternative, an AC fan, does have its benefits however they are generally considered older technology and are less popular than their DC equivalents. If you’d like to learn more about the differences, please refer to our blog here. If you are on the fence, we’d highly recommend opting for a DC ceiling fan.

If you’ve decided on a DC fan and started to browse, you will quickly find that there are hundreds of styles to choose from, each with their own features. This range means you’re more likely to find the perfect fan, but it does make it much harder to find the one.

  • A few things we would recommend you consider while choosing:
    Room size and height are perhaps the most important. Ensure the fan fits your space nicely and has a minimum clearance from blade to floor of 2.1m
  • Do you want a reversible fan? This will turn in the opposite direction in the colder months helping to make your room feel warmer
  • Whether you’d like a light or not? This is something which each of the fans below give you the option for.
  • Noise-level. Each of the fans below are quiet, and could be installed in a bedroom, but it’s worth noting that this is not the case for all fans - if you're looking for a quiet fan a DC fan is the right option but do check for the sound level, particularly if you're a light sleeper
  • Where you live - if you live in a coastal areas we recommend an ABS fan, even if it will be indoors. For outdoors, you can also consider 316 marine grade steel. If you opt for a different material you will likely see corrosion over time and the fan will not last as well as it would in non-coastal areas

Eglo Noosa

One of the most sought after fans is the timeless Eglo Noosa. It’s a beautiful fan to look at and an efficient air mover too. It was launched by Eglo XX years ago and quickly became their flagship model. Eglo makes a lot of good fans, but the Noosa is their best-seller and a favourite here at TLO.

The air movement varies only slightly by fan size, depending on the blade length and speed of rotation, and each has the same elegant blade shape. You’ll have options for an integrated light should you need it too.

It is one of the more expensive fans on the market, but it is a quality fan and we feel it is worth the investment. If style is high on your list, we would highly recommend seeing if the Noosa fits the bill for you.

Brilliant are one of our top suppliers of both lights and fans, and the Amari is their flagship Ceiling Fan. It’s incredibly popular, offer excellent ‘bang for buck’. It’s suitable for indoors as well as outdoor covered areas not exposed to the elements.
