Wall sconces

Wall sconces are one of the oldest forms of lighting, originally being used to describe wall-mounted candle lights. They have continued to be a popular choice with a vast range of sconces now available to match almost any decor. From classic ornate sconces to bold modern designs, they are an elegant and practical lighting solution.

What is the difference between a wall light and a wall sconce?

As the names would suggest, both wall lights and wall sconces are wall-mounted, but wall lights can refer to both indoor and outdoor lighting. Sconces are a type of indoor wall light, traditionally protruding from the wall, rather than lying flush.

How high should a wall sconce be mounted?

The height of your sconce will depend on the height and width of your room, the style of the sconce and also personal preference. A guideline to consider is between 1.5 and 1.75 metres from the ground, and at least 0.5m from the ceiling.

Do wall sconces need to be in pairs?

No, you can put up any number of wall lights to suit your decor or preferences. If your sconces are positioned beside a feature, such as a painting, you may wish to hang a pair to make this symmetrical, however there are no set rules.

We do, however, highly recommend measuring your space before beginning the process to mount your sconces so that they are evenly spaced. This might be between each other or between another fixed point such as a doorway.

Do you need an electrician to put up wall sconces?

While it is possible to put up a sconce yourself, particularly when replacing an existing fitting, we would recommend employing an electrician unless you are an experienced and confident DIYer. This is to protect you and your property, as well as to save time and ensure a professional finish.
