Pendant lights have been a popular lighting choice for many years, and that is not set to change. The array of pendants available today is truly remarkable with a variety of materials, colours, sizes, styles & brands to choose from. Whatever pendant light you’re picturing, it’s probably out there somewhere!

What is the best material for a pendant light?

There is no best material for a pendant, but some will be more robust than others and others easier to clean. For example, a brass pendant will be hardier than an intricate glass pendant, and also easier to clean. However, if you are willing to take a little longer with the dusting and your pendant is positioned correctly, you have the full spectrum of materials available to you; from wood to ceramic, and fabric to metal. We promise you will not be short of choice!

Where should I hang pendant lights?

Pendant lights are highly versatile and well suited to many rooms of the house, from the bathroom to the kitchen. They provide both ambient and task lighting - ideal for over work surfaces, desks & tables - and are an eye-catching alternative to downlights. There is no strict rule about where you should use hanging lights however we have put together a guide on where to position your pendants for maximum impact.

I have a low ceiling, can I still have a pendant light?

Yes, however we would recommend choosing a pendant with a short cord. This is for two reasons:

• Pendant lights can have an impact on the perceived size of a space. If you have large, low pendants it can make a room seem smaller
• A pendant that’s too low will become a daily hazard for bumping into, potentially damaging the pendant as well as whomever bumps into it.

If you fall in love with a pendant with a longer chord, don’t panic, you might be able to get this shortened by your electrician. Please check with our team who will be able to advise on potential adaptations to cord lengths.

How low/ high should my pendant light be from the floor?

As mentioned, a poorly hung pendant can be a nuisance. There’s no hard and fast rule but in general, a pendant that is not above a table or surface should be around 7’ or 2 metres above the floor.

If hanging above a surface, we suggest hanging your light round 80cm above the surface. This will depend on the size and use of the surface, as well as the radius of light that your pendant gives out.
