What are plaster lights?

Plaster lights are light fittings cast from gypsum plaster (you'll also see some made from raw ceramic). Gypsum has been used for centuries in decorative mouldings, cornices and walls, so a plaster fitting reads as part of the architecture rather than an object attached to it. Out of the box they come in a matt white or raw finish, with a solid, chalky texture that diffuses light beautifully.

Trimless plaster downlights are recessed and plastered flush into the ceiling, so once painted there's no visible trim or bezel at all. Can you paint plaster lights?

Yes, and this is the big drawcard. Most plaster lights are designed to be painted:

• Use a standard water-based (acrylic) interior paint.
• Apply light coats with a brush or small roller, keeping paint away from the lamp holder and any LED components.
• Match your wall colour exactly for a fitting that all but disappears, or paint a contrast colour to make it a feature.
• Trimless plaster downlights are painted along with the ceiling after installation and setting, which is what makes the finish completely seamless.
