It depends on your needs. If you just want light as the security feature, a sensor spotlight does the job. For something more advanced, look at an LED sensor light with a built-in WiFi camera that sends alerts to your phone and lets you view from anywhere.

Aluminium is generally best for outdoor lighting. If the light is near saltwater, choose polycarbonate or 316 stainless steel for better corrosion resistance in coastal conditions.

Brighter is generally better for security. A 20W LED spotlight will light up around a 10 to 15 metre area. Just be careful of light pollution spilling onto neighbouring properties.

Many sensor lights are plug-and-play or DIY-friendly, while hardwired 240V models should be installed by a licensed electrician. Solar security lights need no wiring at all, so they are the easiest to fit yourself.

For exposed outdoor positions choose IP65. Undercover spots such as a porch can use IP44. Coastal areas benefit from a higher rating combined with a corrosion-resistant material.

A motion or PIR sensor is the core of a security light, switching it on when movement is detected to deter intruders and save power. Look for adjustable sensitivity, detection range and time settings so you can tune it to your property.
