How many blades is best for a ceiling fan?

It’s a common misconception that the number of blades is a key factor contributing to how good a fan is. In reality, the number of blades has little impact.

Instead, to determine the best fan, you should look at:

  • The airflow/ max air movement
  • The energy efficiency
  • The size in relation to your space
  • The pitch (angle) of the blades, which should be between 12 and 15 degrees

A 3 blade fan vs a 5 blade fan with all other facts the same will give you almost exactly the same outcome. The best number of blades is, therefore, often an aesthetic choice. Read more in our fan buying guide.

What is the most efficient type of ceiling fan?

There are two broad categories of fans to consider, Alternating Current (AC Fans) and Direct Current (DC fans). All ceiling fans will fall into one of the two categories. They often look the same and can be used in place of one another, the difference being in the internal electricals.

AC fans are cheaper upfront. However, DC fans are more efficient, consuming up to 70% less energy than an AC equivalent. If you’re solely looking at efficiency and run cost, a DC fan would be the right option for you.

Our specialists have broken the AC/DC fan comparison down in more detail here.

What ceiling fans have the best airflow?

There are several factors that contribute to airflow including the blade pitch, the motor size and the blade width. When choosing a fan we highly recommend that you check and compare the airflow rating of the fan.

An airflow of 12,000m³/h will be sufficient for most rooms.

Should I choose a hugger or downrod ceiling fan?

A downrod refers to the vertical connection between the ceiling and the fan. Downrods come in a variety of lengths and can even be removed, often referred to as a close or hugger fan.

For low ceilings (3m or less), hugger fans are more popular as there is less chance of the fan getting in the way. The fan sits flush to the ceiling providing maximum clearance between the floor and the fan.

However, if your ceiling is slanted, this is more complex and will likely require a ball joint mount to ensure the fan blades can spin unimpeded.

For higher ceilings, you can choose the downrod length that best suits your needs. Please refer to our buying guide for our recommendations based on different ceiling heights.

Who makes the quietest ceiling fans?

In our experience, there is no one brand that makes a fan significantly more quiet than another.

With advances in technology, most fans sold today are very quiet however we recommend selecting:

  • A DC Ceiling fan - this will always be more quiet than an AC equivalent
  • Looking for a fan made of polycarbonate materials, which cuts through the air most quietly
  • 3 bladed fans over a 4 bladed fan
