A clear glass shade on a black or brass frame, designed to replace the bare batten holder that builders leave in bedrooms, hallways and robes. The glass is left completely clear, which means the globe you choose becomes the feature rather than something to hide.
That is worth planning for. Fit a plain frosted globe and it looks unfinished. Fit a decorative filament or a filament style LED and the fitting suddenly reads as a deliberate choice, for the price of a globe.
The reason to buy a batten fix instead of a hardwired fitting is cost and access. It screws straight onto the standard bayonet batten holder already in the ceiling, so there is no rewiring, no ceiling patching and no electrician callout. A batten cover and a lampholder skirt cover are both supplied, so the old holder is fully concealed and the finished job looks like a proper fixture rather than an adapter.
It is genuinely a do it yourself job for a competent handyperson: turn the power off at the switchboard, remove the existing cover, fit this one. If you are unsure at any point, use an electrician.
