The cheapest way to fix an ugly ceiling light
Most Australian homes still have a bare batten holder somewhere: the laundry, the hallway, a bedroom nobody got around to. Replacing it means an electrician. Screwing a shade onto it does not. This one is designed to go straight onto an existing batten holder, so the whole job is a stepladder and five minutes.
The shade is metal with a cut out pattern, which is what makes it worth doing rather than just tidy. Lit, the pattern throws across the ceiling and down the walls, so a room that had a bare globe in it now has something happening overhead. Unlit, it reads as a clean 250mm drum.
Three finishes are offered. Matt black gives the sharpest projected pattern. Matt white keeps things quiet and bounces more light down into the room. Matt black with copper adds warmth to the interior of the shade, which shows in the light it reflects.
It also fits a DIY suspension cord set if you would rather hang it as a pendant than sit it against the ceiling. The lampholder is B22 bayonet and the globe is not included. An LED or CFL globe suits it best, and a clear globe sharpens the pattern while a frosted one softens it.
