Chrome is having a return after a long stretch where everyone wanted black or brass, and it has an advantage neither of them has. It reflects whatever is around it, so it picks up the colours of the room instead of adding one. The gloss finish keeps it bright rather than industrial.
The shade is a straight drum, 180mm across and 180mm deep, mounted on a 43mm shade ring. Black for contrast, white for the least fuss, grey and taupe if you want the shade to disappear into a neutral scheme. Because it is a standard 43mm ring, a replacement shade later on is easy to source.
