Post tops lights can be fitted on top of gate or fence posts, enabling you to light up your outdoor space in key areas without the need for a standalone lamp post or bollard. The ability to work within your existing garden or driveway design is a major draw of this type of light, and they often work out more cost efficient than a standalone fitting too.

How are they attached?

There are two main methods for securing post tops:

  1. A base fitting that slides over the top of a post. This is a standard size designed to fit mass manufactured posts (commonly 76mm). You can also get extenders for some fittings. Once positioned, the fitting is secured using screws or mounting bolts, ensuring the light remains stable even in strong weather conditions.

  2. Screwed directly into the post is the third man method. This is most common for solar lighting with integrated panels, where no external wiring is needed and is great for ‘odd’ shapes and sizes of post.

Pillar vs post mount

You may also have heard of pillar mount lights. These follow a similar principle to post top lights, being mounted on top of an existing structure such as a wall or gate post. As there is no standard size of pillar, the way you mount your light will vary depending on the light you choose and your post. Most lights have a sturdy in-built plate for attaching the fitting - this should be less than the size of the pillar you are looking to mount it onto.

If you are mounting onto a non-flat or uniform surface, you may need an attachment to create a flat, secure surface for the light to sit on.

What to consider for your post top or pillar mount

  1. Style and Design
Post top lights come in a wide range of styles, from classic lanterns to minimalist contemporary fittings. Consider the overall look of your home and outdoor area - matching the light to your architecture can create a cohesive and polished finish.

Choosing the right post top light involves more than just picking a design you like. A few key factors will ensure you get the best performance, longevity, and overall value.

  1. Light Output and Colour Temperature
Think about how much light you need and the kind of atmosphere you want to create. Warm white light offers a soft, inviting glow, while cool white provides brighter, more functional illumination. For pathways and security, brighter outputs are often preferred.

  2. Material and Durability
Outdoor lighting must withstand the elements. Look for materials like powder-coated aluminium, stainless steel, or UV-resistant plastics. For coastal areas, marine grade stainless steel is usually the best choice.

It’s important that your light has a sufficient IP rating for withstanding dust and water - if your new light will be fully explored to the elements, we recommend an IP65 fitting. Please see further details on IP ratings here.

  1. Power Source

Decide between hardwired and solar options. Hardwired lights generally provide more consistent brightness, while solar lights offer convenience and energy efficiency with minimal installation effort.Solar technology has improved significantly over the past 3 years, in respect of longevity of the light, the quality of output and the range available.

  2. Size and Fit Compatibility
Ensure the light is compatible with your existing or planned post. Check the diameter and mounting type to avoid installation issues. If you're replacing an old fitting, matching the size will make the process much easier.

Why they’re worth considering

  • No need for an additional post or bollard, making the finished result seamless with you existing garden features and fittings

  • Typically lower cost than a full fitting

  • Light can sit up high on top of the post, providing broad illumination

  • Wide range of styles to choose from, from classic coach lights to contemporary

  • Easy installation options, such as solar
